Thoughts on...
Just for today, I will have a program. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from two pests: hurry and indecision.
“Program” makes us think of schedules, tasks, plans routines, and goals… yet, “program” implies so much more…
A Program implies the full gamut of our day and our life… the path we have been on… the path we are on today and the path we plan to continue on tomorrow… Our Life Play… Our Journey… Just for Today
So when we think of “OUR PROGRAM” do we think of the ways we incorporate “OUR PROGRAM” into the different areas of our life? The areas of our mind, body, spirit.
Does “OUR PROGRAM” check for balance?
Does “OUR PROGRAM” allow for contemplation into areas where we may need to delve deeper?
Just for today, I will have a program. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it.
First we have to know… WHO determines our daily program? We may have a job and for the most part our employer determines the focus of our program for a large portion of our day, but within our job we have many opportunities to either give our best or just trudge threw the day… waiting for the day to be over. When we leave work… who determines “OUR PROGRAM” then?
Do we have a program for our life, outside of work, and… what circumstances are needed for our program to change? How do we feel when our program changes? How often does our program change? What strategies do we use to reset our program when we become unfocused?
To what extent are our strengths and weaknesses - limiting or expanding the MENTAL portion of our program?
To what extent are our strengths and weaknesses - limiting or expanding the EMOTIONAL portion of our program?
To what extent are our strengths and weaknesses - limiting or expanding the PHYSICAL portion of our program?
And, finally, to what extent are our strengths and weaknesses - limiting or expanding the SPIRITUAL portion of our program?
Our answers to these questions pretty much determine how often we deal with hurry and indecision and, ultimately, our program for our life.
So, what are some positive and negative outcomes of having a program?
Without a program we are scattered, mostly dissatisfied, angry and, or upset. With a program our actions are mostly satisfied, calm, and thoughtful.
Without a program we: Easily lose control and have outbursts of anger, temper, and blame others.
With a program we know who is in control and recognize others are probably trying their best.
Without a program we: Become a member of the “throw away'' generation, discarding relationships, people, jobs, and school whenever things are not working out as quickly as we want.
With a program we understand that relationships, people, jobs, and school require a commitment of our time and effort.
Without a program we waste energy worrying about how slow things are changing. With a program we direct our energy toward the changes we want.
Without a program we abandon impulsively from helping in a difficult situation because we don’t see an immediate pay off.
With a program we realize helping in difficult situations requires patience and maturity.
Without a program we blame people who want to support us on our undertakings, because results seem gradual and “they” aren’t helping us enough.''
With a program we recognize results can be slow and take responsibility and re-evaluate our steps rather than blame
Without a program we become pessimistic about life, seeing only the “cup… half empty''
With a program we see the “cup… half filled.''
Without a program we find ourselves in such a hurry that we only see the worse.
With a program we find ourselves counting your blessings.
Without a program we burn ourselves out.
With a program we have goals and manageable and measureable objectives.
Without a program we lose the ability to build on our successes.
With a program our goals and objectives are clearly defined so the build on each previous success. We break large goals into doable short-term objectives, Attainable in the immediate future.
Accept, understand, and forgive ourselves for being fragile, imperfect, and weak. Become our own best friend. Love ourselves.
Release worries, concerns, anxieties, and doubts about attaining our goal. Be ready and willing to face challenges as we strive for personal growth.
Visualization to clarify
“OUR PROGRAM”
Relax.
Close your eyes.
Count slowly from one to five.
Visualize yourself on a long path that reaches out into a vast and open field.
As you begin down the path… you see a variety of road signs intended to give your program direction. Each sign represents a different focus in your life's program. The signs are: mental, emotional, physical and spiritual.
As you reach each sign, visualize what your ultimate goals are for this area. Carry these visions with you as you approach each sign. After you reach the last sign you will have your clearer picture of the program you want to achieve. Continue walking into the horizon with confidence that your goals in life will always be clearly in focus.
Once you are ready, count backward five to one. Open your eyes and feel relaxed and ready to work.
To develop a consistent program for life, take it one day at a time…Just for today consider each day that special gift that allows us to grow one step closer to “OUR PROGRAM”. Accept the reality that we need time, effort, and energy to achieve our program. Some long-standing habits might offer resistance… but if we are persistent… we will succeed.
Reframe our perspective on the past, present, and future. In other words, don’t dwell on past mistakes and failings. Don’t worry about what tomorrow will bring Live Just for Today.
Confront our fears about maintaining our program. Confront our fears about being successful. Remember, the world was not created in a day. Beautiful symphonies, works of art, and literary masterpieces were not created in a day. A lifetime is not lived in a day.
Just for today, I will have a program. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from two pests: hurry and indecision.
