Acne

The skin is our largest organ and one of its functions is to eliminate a portion of the body's toxic waste products.  If your body contains more toxins than the kidneys and liver can effectively discharge this skin takes over.  Some doctors call the skin the third kidney. As the toxins escape through the skin, the skin's integrity is disrupted.

Good Place to Start

Work on herbal cleansing.  If your liver is not working at its best, it can worsen acne because it cannot break down and clear excess hormones from the body as it should.

Ascorbic Acid is a sugar acid with antioxidant properties. One of the few topical agents whose effectiveness against wrinkles and fine lines is backed by a fair amount of reliable scientific evidence.

Salicylic Acid (beta hydroxy acid) is a great, non-irritating skin care product.  Salicylic acid is ideal for people with acne and rosacea, but can be drying if used too often. Use once a day if you have dry skin and twice a day if your skin is oily. Salicylic acid is successful in treating acne because it targets oil in hair follicles and exfoliates pores.

Many acne treatments contain benzoyl peroxide which may be irritating those with sensitive skin. Try salicylic acid instead.

Lavender Essential Oil
is a good antibiotic and antiseptic that can be applied directly to individual blemishes.  Discontinue if a rash develops.

OR...

Tea Tree Oil is a natural antibiotic and antiseptic.  Dab full-strength tea tree oil (sparingly) on blemishes three times a day, or add 1 dropperful of tea tree oil to 1/4 cup warm water and pat it on the affected area with a clean cotton ball.  Discontinue if a rash develops.
Remember: clogged pores are one of the three contributing factors to acne.

If acne is extensive or badly inflamed... DO NOT use steam treatments as this could worsen your acne.

Several Dietary Suggestions:

Eat a high-fiber diet. This keeps your colon clean and rids the body of toxins.

Increase the amount of raw foods.  The more natural raw foods you eat, the faster your skin will clear and heal.  Excellent choices are almonds, beets cashews, and Swiss chard.

Eat lots of fruit.

Eat more foods rich in zinc as zinc is an antibacterial agent and a necessary element in the oil-producing glands of the skin.  If your diet is low in zinc, it may cause acne flare-ups.

Burdock rot and red clover are powerful blood cleaners.

Milk thistle aids the liver in cleansing the blood.

There is something about the other-side of those teenage years.  As we age, our hormones shut down, they frustrate us as much as when they turn on.
Things you can do:

Change your pillowcase frequently.  A dirty pillowcase is a primary cause of acne.

Check your laundry detergent…
You may have developed an allergy.

Check your skin cleansers… some can irritate even if you have used them for years.

Only wash your face once or twice a day.  Washing too often can cause breakouts.
